How To Mention Someone On Instagram
Whether you share a story or comment on Instagram, you can mention someone in it. This mentioning someone is also known as tagging on Instagram. Mentioning someone in a story or a comment means adding a direct link to the profile page of the Instagram user. This link, when tapped, will take you to the profile page of the Instagram user. When you mention someone on Instagram, that Instagram user gets a notification informing of this mention. Also, the Instagram user receives a direct message with a preview of the story in which there is a mention.

Mentioning in a story
You can mention someone in an Instagram story posted on your account. To do this, you need to know the username of the Instagram user that you want to mention. To find out the username, open the profile page of that Instagram user, and you will find the username beside the profile picture of the user. Note down this username. Do this for all the Instagram users whom you want to mention in your story. Now, you can start mentioning them in your story. Create a story first. If you do not know how to create a story, it is straightforward. First, you need to go to the home page of your Instagram account and then swipe right or tap on the camera icon located in the top-right corner of the app screen. Next, take a photo or record a video and add some filters, stickers, text, etc. Tap on the ‘Aa’ icon and type each of the Instagram users you want to mention. Note that you have to type the ‘@’ symbol before each username. Once you are done with this, you can tap on the ‘send to’ option in the bottom-right corner. Choose whom you want to send this story to and then tap on the ‘share’ option. Lastly, tap on the ‘done’ option.
Mentioning in a comment
When you mention someone, they can see the location (ie, an Instagram story or an Instagram post) on Instagram where they have been mentioned. When you are commenting on an Instagram post, you might sometimes want to mention someone so that they can also see that post. It could be a trending post which you do want that Instagram user to miss seeing. Or, it could be an Instagram post by one of your friends, and you want to make this post reach as many numbers of Instagram users as possible. Mentioning someone in a comment is extremely simple and straightforward. First, go to that post where you want to mention someone. Now, type the ‘@’ symbol. Instagram will start suggesting some of the Instagram users you are already connected to. You can choose someone from this list, or if you know, the username of that Instagram user, just type it after the ‘@’ symbol. Do this for each of the Instagram users that you want to mention.
Points to note:
- When an Instagram user is mentioned in a story, that user can also post that same story if he / she wants on his / her own Instagram account.
- If you cannot mention a particular Instagram user, then it means that the Instagram user has set the privacy settings such that no one can mention that user.
- There is a limit to how many Instagram users you can mention on a page of your story. You can only mention a maximum of 10 Instagram users on one page of your story.
