Apple: HomePod with Lossless support is coming

Soon Apple will introduce Lossless Audio in Apple Music. The question immediately arose: where is the hardware on which we can hear this better sound quality? Apple has now come up with the redeeming answer. A support document indicates that the HomePod and HomePod mini will have a future software update.

Apple Music Lossless will be launched in June, this is an extra option of the music streaming service that sounds a lot better but also consumes more data. Initially, the current HomePods are not suitable to support this better audio quality. That’s why we wrote in an opinion piece that Apple Music with Lossless Audio needs a new HomePod. However, current affairs are catching up with this wish. In a newly released support document, Apple says that the HomePods will still be made suitable for lossless audio via an update.

Will AirPods also get Lossless support?

This is good news for owners of Apple’s smart speakers, but what about the much larger number of AirPods users? For the time being, it seems that that group is less fortunate. In the support document, Apple states that the current Bluetooth connections are unable to support the higher sound quality.

And the AirPods Max? Even those will not support the better audio quality wirelessly. Apple does say that it is possible to listen lossless via a cable, but then you do not have the best possible quality.

The remainder of the support document is a list of frequently asked questions. We have already listed the most important ones and answered them in our Apple Music Lossless Audio FAQ. As of June, Apple Music Lossless will launch with more than 20 million songs.
