Help saint still has a lot to learn: ‘My son (5) caught me filling his shoe’

Juanita (35) is married to Simon (45) and mother of Jeff (5).

Nauseous because of ginger nuts

Believe it or not, Sinterklaas has been a topic of conversation with us since the summer. Jeff claims since August that he regularly sees the saintly man bobbing over the roofs on his horse, eats gingerbread nuts as soon as they hit the shelves and puts Sinterklaas songs on repeat non-stop. In short: it is a party that our son enjoys immensely.

Saturday

Jeff prefers to put on his shoe every day, but we convinced him that Sinterklaas and the Pieten only work on weekends, so he only puts his boot in front of the stove on Saturday evening. That way Simon and I have plenty of time in the evening to wrap the shoe present and take a bite of the apple that Jeff puts in front of the horse.

A plan that worked like a charm last year, but we forgot for a moment that Jeff has suddenly become so enthusiastic about Sinterklaas this year that he regularly has trouble falling asleep. And so last week, while Simon and I dutifully draped some gingerbread cookies around his boot, he suddenly stood in front of us.

“Mom, can I?”

“What are you doing?” Jeff asked in a hoarse voice. I stiffened, felt caught and really couldn’t say anything anymore. Fortunately, Simon immediately jumped into his assistant role. “We just got a call from the Pieten,” he said, picking at the present. “It was raining so hard that they couldn’t get on the roof – way too slippery. That’s why they asked if we could put the gift in your shoe. But go back to bed quickly, for you may not open it until morning.”

Jeff gave us a dubious look, but swallowed it sweetly and turned back to his bedroom. The next morning he was standing next to our bed at the stroke of 06:00. “Mom? Can I open my present now?”

Thank God. He hadn’t noticed.
