Have you also received this strange email from Google?

Have you received an email from Google? Some people think it’s fake because it’s a bit confusing, but this email is real. Here’s what it means and why Google sends it.

hangouts

Remember Hangouts? The chat program we used before it became Google Chat was one of the lifebloods at least in our editorial office. So we have quite a lot of crazy photos – and of course deadly serious photos – in Hangouts. However, the old Hangouts photo gallery is going away next month, so Google recommends that you take a good look at your album archive.

The text of the email is as follows:

You are getting this email because you recently viewed the Album Archive or you may have content that is visible in the Album Archive. As of July 19, 2023, the Album Archive will no longer be available. We recommend using Google Takeout to download a copy of the data in your Album Archive before then.
Currently, the Album Archive allows you to view and manage album content from some Google products.

However, some content that is only available in the Album Archive will be removed on or after July 19, such as:
1. In rare cases, small thumbnail photos and album comments or likes
2. Certain Google Hangouts data from the Album Archive
3. Background images uploaded to the Gmail theme chooser before 2018

If you want to keep this data, make a copy of it using Google Takeout. After the Album Archive is no longer available, you can still use these Google products to directly view and manage certain content.

Google Album Archive

If you go to get.google.com/albumarchive, you will see in the pop-up that the plug will be pulled out on July 19. You still have the chance to view the old photos and save them elsewhere (Google recommends Takeout for this).

You can see photos from Hangouts, but also from Blogger, for example. It shows everything arranged by conversation, so if you look at the Hangout folder you see everything as a kind of time travel. Nice to see, and so it’s up to you what you want to keep.
