‘Half of Dutch families have a smart home at home, this is popular’

Smarthome is gaining popularity in the Netherlands, because half of our families now have smart devices in their home. Last year, this was the case for 42 percent. The most popular product in our homes is smart lighting, according to a new study.

Smart home products in the Netherlands

Half of Dutch households have one or more smart home products at home, according to research that Multiscope conducted with 5262 respondents. The market researchers see a strong growth in the number of smart devices. A year ago, 41% of families had a smart home at home, and this was the case for 36 percent of families two years ago.

The number of devices is also growing per family. In total, Dutch households have 2.9 billion euros worth of smart home products at home. The market grew by more than 400 million in the past year. If we look at the most popular category of smart products, we see that smart lighting and switches are the most common, i.e. in 27 percent of households. Smart speakers are at number two (at 22%) and the third most popular are products from Energy and heating (at 19%).

Save costs

According to the researchers, most users are charmed by the convenience and extra comfort that smart devices offer, but a second notable reason is to cut costs. Take, for example, a smart thermostat – the third most popular category – that can help you use your energy more efficiently.

When people in the survey indicate that they are not interested in smart home products, this is mainly for two reasons: because the products do not meet the requirements or because they still offer too little added value in the eyes of the respondents. In a recent AW Poll we also asked which smart home products you have in your house. Smart lighting was only the second most popular category at the time. Find out all about it here.
