Grand Theft Auto 6 gets a woman in the lead
Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a woman for the first time in 25 years.
Who hasn’t played them? Grand Theft Auto Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V… When the undersigned was still a student, many an evening was spent rescuing Lance Vance. Play missions, carjack and misbehave with the whole dorm in Vice City and San Andreas. Woke didn’t exist yet and let’s just say the ladies in the game weren’t portrayed very emancipated.
According to Bloomberg, the student atmosphere at the creator of GTA, Rockstar Games is over. GTA 6, if they make it, should be released sometime between April 2023 and March 2024 and it will take a different tack. A Latin American protagonist becomes playable in the new game and will become part of a gang of bank robbers.
Until now, female lead roles were only playable in the multiplayer modes of the online GTA versions. Those were custom characters, so not quite the real deal. For GTA 6 it will be a real starring role.
Project Americas
According to the same Bloomberg article, the game currently has the working title Project Americas. Based on the original plans to include large areas of North and South America in the game. Due to a shortage of employees at Rockstar, that plan was largely scrapped, but a solution has also been devised.
When GTA 6 comes out, the story will initially play around a fictional Miami. That sounds like a return for Vice City. The game will then be regularly updated after release and expanded with new missions and new cities.
Inclusive office culture
Rockstar Games has also grown as a company, according to the article. The boys’ club that was responsible for the GTA franchise has since been transformed into a real company. In 2022, that means a more inclusive office culture, sending off abusive managers, improving working conditions and hiring flex workers full-time.
Morale is high among the employees, according to a Rockstar source. The greater social involvement and increasing inclusivity also ensures a different content of the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto So.
After the police murder of George Floyd and the social unrest it caused in the United States and far beyond, a Cops ‘n’ Crooks mode has been removed from the plans and we now also get a female playable main character. In addition, the intention is to put fewer jokes in the game that confirm stereotypes of certain groups.
We find inclusiveness a bit difficult to reconcile with the Grand Theft Auto image, but well, we are curious how this will all be translated into a new cool GTA. If only we could just tow someone out of a car and joyride through fictional Miami. Then everything will be fine.
