Although the opening keynote of I / O lasted only two hours, Google managed to make twelve announcements. Google kicked off the night with the announcement of two new Maps features. After that, the search giant managed to surprise with, among other things, the LaMDA development, with which it wants to make its Assistant a little more human again. Furthermore, Google announced during the developer conference that it will provide its password manager with Duplex on the Web to replace ‘automatic passwords’ that have been leaked.

Android, Wear and Maps

Not to be missed was the announcement of Android 12, with the renewed Material You interface. With the renewed appearance, it is the user’s turn and emotion becomes more important. Google can also, the company indicated during the conference, equate the details of devices with the pixels on the screen. Android 12 must therefore provide more unity in the Google ecosystem. For Google, Android 12 also means a renewed focus on privacy, with, for example, buttons to completely disable microphones and cameras on your phone.

Google’s announcement, in collaboration with Samsung, also drew considerable attention. Previously, the necessary rumors were spread about Samsung’s arrival to Wear OS, but confirmation for a definitive switch from Tizen was not forthcoming. Until the I / O keynote, that is. Due to the collaboration for Wear between Google and Samsung, the operating system must become faster and more energy-efficient. The range of Wear apps will also grow, and manufacturers will now be able to develop their ‘own shell’ for Wear as standard, as OPPO has previously done.

Another big announcement from I / O 2021 came from the Maps team with features to make Maps even smarter.
