Drag API in Android

To be even more efficient with the battery in your smartphone or tablet, Android gets a Sleep API. The company has been offering an Activity Recognition API for some time that uses machine learning to apply battery optimization when the phone is not in use. Google is now taking it a step further with the Sleep API.

The light and motion sensors are read for the Sleep API. It can retrieve data about users related to sleep. For example, it can be used for using Bedtime mode in the Google Clock app. In this way it gives two kinds of information. Google says the following about this;

  1. A ‘sleep confidence’, which is reported at a regular interval (up to 10 minutes)
  2. A daily sleep segment which is reported after a wakeup is detected

Developers can apply the sleep API in their app. These algorithms can improve battery life. Processes that are not important can then be closed. For the feature, Google is working with developer Urbandroid, known from Sleep As Android. More information can be found in Google’s blog post.
