Google Assistant Routines are now actually triggered when you get home

If you have set up Google Assistant Routines, when you get home you can command Google to start that Routine. From now on, it gets better: Google Assistant Routines can now start automatically when you come home or leave.

Trigger Routines

Basically, if you give permission and have your location enabled on your phone, Google knows when you’re at home or away. However, now you can set a specific point on the map, after which a certain Routine is triggered. This makes it a bit more specific when Google should take action. That’s very handy, because sometimes it takes your phone a while to realize that you’re home. By choosing a specific location, the Routine is therefore triggered earlier.

A Routine is a kind of chain reaction that is started when you give the command. You first set up those Routines via the Google Assistant. For example, you can ensure that Google turns up your heating and turns on your lights in one Routine, handy when you get home. In another Routine, you do the opposite, for when you leave.

Google Home

The new feature seems to be already available in the Google Assistant and the Google Home app, but we haven’t been able to spot it yet. Once the time has come, you will in any case need the Google Home app to set up Routines, because that is not possible directly via Google Assistant. This is how you work:

  1. Start the Google Home app on your smartphone
  2. Tap Routines, choose to create a new Routine by tapping the plus at the bottom right
  3. Determine how you want the routine to start, for example by means of a voice command, although you can also choose a specific location after the update
  4. Then, by choosing ‘+ add action’, make a choice in what you want to happen (such as lights on, hear the latest weather forecast)
  5. Tap ‘Save’ to save your Routine
