Germans have never had to pay more than in 2022

Motorists have been hit hard by price hikes in 2022. The ADAC has investigated exactly how hard it is. There one comes to the conclusion: There has never been a worse year for Germany’s motorists. But at least some improvement is in sight.

ADAC draws a bitter balance: 2022 is the most expensive tank year so far

The past year 2022 should not have left good memories for any driver. A look at the price boards at the petrol stations with week-long liter prices of more than 2 euros has burned in – and that’s no wonder. 2022 is over and with the last day of the year it is clear: It was the most expensive year that German motorists have ever experienced.

This is the result of the ADAC, which compared the nationwide average prices. The result: “German drivers have never had to pay as much for fuel as they will in 2022.” They have the most Price increases for diesel struck. The liter cost an annual average of 1.946 euros, an increase of more than 56 cents compared to the previous year.

Gasoline drivers got off slightly cheaper: According to the ADAC, the liter of Super E10 cost an average of 1.860 euros, almost 34 cents more than in 2021. 2022 is the first year in which the Diesel price higher than petrol is.

The ADAC also shows the extreme fluctuations that drove up the price in 2022: for Super E10 in 2022, there was 55.9 cents between the day with the cheapest fuel price and the day with the highest. For diesel, the difference even jumps to 75.9 cents (source: ADAC).

Hopefully not only the fuel prices will change with the new year:

to the respective highs it came in quick succession March 2022 in direct consequence of Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine. In the summer, the three-month fuel discount brought temporary relief for consumers. The cheapest prices were always found at the beginning of January, and in 2022 they no longer fell anywhere near the pre-crisis level.

Breathe a sigh of relief for motorists: ADAC reports falling prices at the turn of the year

According to the ADAC, there are several reasons for the price explosion: the Ukraine war, supply problems and stronger diesel demand from the industry are among them. But looking towards the end of the year gives hope. In the last two months of 2022, the Average prices dropped significantly: A liter of premium E10 petrol cost almost 14 cents less in December than it did in November 2022. Diesel costs around 15 cents less.
