Germans don’t want to pay more for ARD and ZDF
We pay 18.36 euros every month for public service broadcasting. But what would be a fair amount? An extensive survey gives a clear result – but there are also surprises when it comes to opinions on the ideal amount of the GEZ fee.
Germans want to pay less broadcasting fees
For ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio there is a monthly fee of 18.36 euros per household. The amount of what was formerly known as the GEZ fee is always the subject of heated debates. Whether it is sufficient, too high or should be abolished entirely is a popular and often debated topic.
The opinion research institute INSA-Consulere, founded by former CDU politician Hermann Binkert, has now published the results of a large survey together with the Bild newspaper. Accordingly, whole 39 percent of those surveyed would prefer not to pay anything at all.
At least 13 percent are of the opinion that up to 4.99 euros per month are sufficient should. 16 percent would be satisfied with twice the amount. One in ten can imagine putting up to €14.99 per month on the table.
Only 7 percent consider the current amount of EUR 18.36 to be appropriate. Only 5 percent could make friends with an even higher broadcasting fee. In fact, there are considerations according to which the amount could rise to up to 25.19 euros per month.

The survey by INSA-Consulere and Bild also showed that there is a connection between the desired amount of the license fee and the respective party preference of respondents gives.
On average CDU voters want to pay less than SPD voters. Green voters, on the other hand, could imagine an increase, while FDP voters tend to agree with the current amount of 18.36 euros (source: Picture).
