Your iPhone will monitor whether you are looking at the screen in the future

Suppose you are reading a book on your iPad and you fall asleep. No one turns your iPad off for you. As soon as you wake up, the battery is empty and that sucks. Apple is looking into implementing gaze detection and attention detection to know when you’re using or not using a device. In this way, the company hopes to improve the battery life of future iPhones, iPads and MacBooks.

Current Apple devices already save energy by turning the screen off automatically after a certain amount of time. This happens if you haven’t touched the device in a while, provided you have configured it in settings. There is also a function that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the ambient light.

Various sensors that are part of the patent

Apple has a new patent under the name ‘Attention detection service’. The patent shows that Apple wants to monitor whether you are actually using a device by means of a number of sensors. Think of sensors that notice whether your eyes are focused on the screen, or whether you are busy with something else.

Apple loves patents

Apple receives all kinds of new patents for new technological gadgets almost every week. We previously wrote about a hydration sensor for the Apple Watch and a MacBook with a removable mouse and keyboard. Figuring out Apple patents is very interesting, as they show what Apple may have in store for us in the future.

Many patents ultimately never see the light of day. Yet every new, groundbreaking feature starts with a patent. Do you see a future in the ‘Attention detection service’ patent? If yes (or no), let us know in the comments below this article!
