NAS servers have been with us for some time now, but a lot of people still don’t know what it’s all about. Network Attached Storage (NAS) is, as the name implies, a storage that can be accessed online.
Physical disks are stored on a NAS that is connected to your home or business network using a network cable. Thanks to the wireless connection, you can access it from anywhere using your computer, phone or tablet.
Although a NAS solution is more expensive to procure, you only save money. In the end, it comes out cheaper, while offering significantly more space for your data.
Synology DS220 + is the ideal solution
Synology is a leader in NAS systems. We had the opportunity to try the DS220 +, which offers a lot.
Synology DS220 + in brief:
- 2 GHz processor
- 2 GB RAM
- Maximum capacity 32 TB
- 2 slots for 3.5 ”disk
- Raid 0, Raid 1
- Consumption 14.69 W
- 2 x USB 3.2
- Rozmery: 323 x 108 x 165 mm

The device runs on the latest DSM 7.0 operating system, which is faster, clearer and more debugged than the previous version. If we translate it into ordinary language, it works reliably and without any problems.
First run or how to do it
Everything works very simply. Simply insert the disk on which the data will be stored into the device, connect to the network with a network cable and switch it on. You will then go to find.synology.com in your web browser, where Synology DS220 + will appear. Of course, during the installation process, your computer must be connected to the same network as your NAS.
The system will guide you nicely through the installation procedure and initial settings. You will also create credentials here that you should save, as you will use them to connect to the device later. Done, everything is set up and installed.
Synology Photos: Back up, manage and share photos
Photos and videos take up the most space on smartphones. Having a large storage space where they can be stored automatically is definitely a great thing. With Synology NAS, you can store your selfies, memories or professional photos securely and access them from anywhere.
It is based on three pillars. Upload, manage and share photos. All of this requires quality software called Synology Photos. The application concentrates all possible functions related to photos into one whole. From saving, to managing, deleting, creating or sharing albums. You can do all this with just one application.
One of the most important functions is the automatic backup of the entire photo gallery. This means that if you accidentally delete your favorite images, you won’t lose them.
First and foremost, you need to install Synology photos. This is easily possible using the Package Center. We can now upload our photos. It works not only via a computer, but also on a smartphone. Whether with Android or iOS.
Basic functions, such as chronological ordering of photos or their sorting into albums, are a matter of course. But Synology Photos can do so much more. The application can automatically create albums based on various parameters. Artificial intelligence can recognize people in photos and then sort them according to who is in the photo. This is also the case for the places you have visited. Of course, you can also create albums manually.
All this works not only on the computer, but also on smartphones. All you need to do is Synology Photos, which you can download from Google Play or the App Store. The application will ask you immediately when you first start if you want to back up your photos automatically. This is exactly what we recommend.
The environment of the mobile application itself is fast and clear, despite all possible functions. There are 4 main categories – photos, albums, sharing and more. Most of the time you will use the first three, the fourth contains settings that are good to go through at the beginning. It will not be necessary to return to it later.
What are the benefits of this type of storage?
First of all, you have significantly more space available. For hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of data in cloud services, you pay a lot of money every month. In this case, just buy a disk with the required capacity and you do not pay anything extra. Such storage will provide more space for less money.
Of course, safety is also an important part. Photos and files are stored in your storage, not in a cloud owned by a private company. If you care about your privacy, NAS is the right choice.
Another advantage is that you can access the information on your disk, which is physically located in your home, via the Internet from anywhere and at any time. The icing on the cake is the possibility to share files with other members of the household or colleagues at work. Of course, only the files you want to be shared.
An important factor in security is that all data is encrypted. This means that if someone steals your storage, they will not be able to access your data.
