The developers from the Asobo studio brought other interesting information to the Flight Simulator account, which was released in mid-August. In a new blog post on the official website, the authors summarize the current interest in the game, expressions through statistics on the number of players, hours flown or distance traveled, and add details about the planned update. It will arrive next Tuesday, December 22, and the most attractive thing will be to make the VR mode available for an even better atmosphere and merging with the simulation.
“To end this year in style, we have the latest episode of this season’s developer diaries, which includes information about VR! We are looking forward to being able to release this matter and be prepared for a few surprises, “the representatives of the studio attract. At the beginning of the video, he tries to dispel any doubts about how the VR mode will be processed, given the apparent absence of any previous experience. Designer Francois Dacquin explains that Asobo, through his Holoforge division, has been working on augmented reality contracts for many years, in collaboration with theme parks, museums, but also with companies operating in the aviation industry. Thanks to this, according to Dacquin, they were able to quickly put together a team that will take care of the implementation of VR and adjust everything so that it responds adequately to the player’s position and outlook.
The result should be a full-fledged VR mode, the processing of which is not negatively reflected in the quality of graphics, and players should thus have access to one of the most immersive experiences in the field of flight simulators.
Nevertheless, it was not easy and the designer further describes that it was necessary to come up with a special dual renderer, which will also be optimized so that it does not put too much strain on the processor and graphics card. The result should be a full-fledged VR mode, the processing of which is not negatively reflected in the quality of graphics, and players should thus have access to one of the most immersive experiences in the field of flight simulators. Virtual reality gaming will then be available to as many players as possible, as the developers have previously confirmed that the previous information on time exclusivity for the G2 Reverb headset from HP is no longer valid. “We worked with Alex Kipman and the Microsoft team to implement the Microsoft Mixed Reality standard. It is an interface that allows direct compatibility with all known headsets […] which support OpenXR, ”says Dacquin.
As for the statistics mentioned in the introduction, Asobo boasted that over 2 million players have already tried the game, who in a cumulative total spent over 50 million hours in the air. The distance they cover is billions of miles, but more interesting is the comparison with a potential flight from Earth to the Sun, which players could travel nineteen times. The most visited place in Flight Simulator is the city of New York, however, there are still 28 percent of the surface that no one has flown over yet. The fact that Flight Simulator has a 91 percent rating on the Metacricit aggregator cannot go unnoticed. And to top it all off, the developers, in addition to the VR mode and encouraging statistics, have decided to please the player with a share of snow, which will also come into play with a realistic design on December 22 and will include a believable rendering of ice rinks.
