Apple products will be fully USB-C from 2024
Although the iPhone still uses the famous Lightning connector for the time being, the European Union has decided differently with new laws in the context of climate change and sustainability. All electronic devices will soon have the same universal connection: USB-C.
Many Apple products have already received this connection, but there are more to come. The USB-C connector is more durable and will soon allow all devices in Europe to be charged with the same cable. Read in this article which Apple products we can expect to have a USB-C connection.
These Apple products may get usb-c
At the moment, a number of Apple products already have a USB-C port. We can already find this in the new Macs (such as the MacBook Air) and some iPads are already equipped with a USB-C connection. The following products are rumored to be added to this line-up soon.
iPhone 15 and the ‘normal’ iPads get USB-c
While the iPhone 14 is expected to keep the Lightning connector, based on the rumours, we expect at least one new iPhone 15 model to use USB-C. Here’s what the most trusted Apple analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman reported. The iPhone 15 series is expected in the fall of 2023.
In addition, Gurman says that the last iPad without USB-c, the ‘normal’ iPad, will soon also switch to this universal connection. According to this analyst, Apple would present the 10th generation of this iPad to us at the end of this year. With this transition, there is no longer a single iPad on the market with a Lightning connector. However, this connection was already outdated.
Mainly accessories are switching to USB-C
Once the iPhone 15 has switched to USB-C, the aforementioned Kuo expects other Apple accessories to follow soon. He is talking about the charging case of the second generation AirPods Pro and the MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 and newer.
In addition, accessories for the Mac will also receive an update. Apple’s infamous trio (Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse) are also reportedly making the switch to USB-C soon. All three accessories currently feature a Lightning connector for charging.
Why is usb-c the standard connection in the EU?
The European Parliament has been working for years to provide all devices on the continent with one connection. That has finally been achieved this year: new devices must have a USB-C connection by the autumn of 2024. This doesn’t mean much to your current Apple product. So you only really notice it when you buy new devices.
There is a certain ‘rush’ to reduce waste and emissions. The new USB-C law ensures that all mobile devices can be charged with the same charger. This has a lot of advantages. This way you can charge anywhere you want and in theory you only need one cable to provide all your devices with power.
