“Fastest charging station” fills e-car batteries in 15 minutes
The fastest charging station in the world comes from Europe. At least that is what the manufacturer ABB promises, which has announced the Terra 360 for this year. With 360 kW, all common e-cars should be fully charged in a maximum of 15 minutes. But not all electric cars benefit from it by a long way.
3 minutes for 100 km: The “fastest charging station in the world” comes from ABB
With the Terra 360, the Swiss-Swedish group ABB wants to bring the “fastest charging station in the world” onto the market. The charging station should come with common e-cars charge up to 360 kW can. This will take a maximum of 15 minutes, even with the largest batteries. The market launch of the Terra 360 for Europe is planned for 2021. It starts in the USA, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region in 2022 (source: FIG).
The Terra 360 is operated with direct current, which is typical for fast charging stations. Up to four electric cars per column should be able to charge at the same time. The necessary energy for 100 km can be reached in just three minutes. ABB is certain that it is way ahead of the competition. In addition to the unmatched speed, you can rely on convenience when charging, the Terra 360 can also be individually adapted.
With an output of 360 kW, ABB can actually outperform its competitors: The Superchargers are coming from Tesla just to a maximum output of 250 kW (Source: Auto Motor Sport). Ionity is currently working on expanding its charging network with 350 kW fast chargers, for example. ABB also sells to Ionity, with the new column you are in a certain way beating yourself, albeit by a narrow margin.
E-cars: By no means all models are suitable for fast charging
However, the number of e-car drivers who can benefit from the new charging station immediately is limited. Because only cars that can be charged quickly can benefit from the top speed. Constant fast charging is also one heavier load on the battery. If you want to keep your battery in good condition and with a high capacity for as long as possible, you should also regularly prefer a lower charging power with a correspondingly longer charging time.
You can find common misconceptions about e-cars in Video:
According to the company, ABB has already sold more than 21,000 DC and around 440,000 AC charging stations worldwide. The Terra 360 should be a successful model. ABB does not name prices, but the fast charging station is not designed for private customers either, but for petrol stations or for charging company fleets.
