FaceID with face mask will soon be possible with Apple Watch

FaceID becomes usable again in times of corona, because Apple is testing logging in with a face mask using an Apple Watch.

Since Apple refuses to provide their expensive iPhones with a fingerprint scanner (for now), many users have a problem. After all, you always wear a face mask in public, so FaceID does not work properly. You must then temporarily fall back on an old-fashioned code. But the next version of iOS 14 makes FaceID with a mouth mask possible, thanks to an Apple Watch.

FaceID with mouth mask thanks to Apple Watch

FaceID in combination with a mouth mask results in discomfort. A recent survey shows that many users are furious. With iOS 14.5 (beta version), the billion-dollar company finally comes up with a solution. For that you need an Apple Watch, writes Engadget.

You will soon be able to log in to your iPhone with FaceID, if you have already been authenticated on your Apple Watch, face mask or not. Then you look at your iPhone as usual and unlock the smartphone. The Watch will then vibrate briefly to let you know that the login attempt is successful. The feature should be turned on manually.

It certainly gives users some extra options in times of corona, but of course it is not waterproof. First of all, someone with an iPhone must also have an Apple Watch to use the feature.

In addition, the feature is a bit less secure than usual. Apple has already made it easier to log in with FaceID with a face mask. The software is just less critical and focuses on the visible parts of the face for authentication.

Nonetheless, it’s a thing and since people in the linked study report even disabling all security out of frustration, this is basically a nice middle ground. It is not yet known when iOS 14.5 will be released.
