Expensive cars are stolen using AirTags
Apple’s devices are very handy, but now the AirTags are also used to steal expensive cars.
‘What is gone is seen’. That is pontifically stated on Apple’s website when you go to the AirTags. With the small device you no longer have to search for your things. Attach one to your keys and put another in your bag. This way you’ll never lose anything again, because they automatically appear in the ‘Find My’ app. But smart criminals also see the benefit of this.
Expensive cars are stolen in Canada with AirTags. According to the York police, enterprising thieves use the transmitters costing around 35 euros to track cars. They can do this in an unobtrusive way. They then track the valuable cars with Apple’s app and then decide to steal the car. At least five cars have been stolen in this way in recent weeks. It is unknown whether vehicles have been stolen in this way in the Netherlands.
The police say it is better to park your expensive car in a parking garage. This is to prevent thieves from getting to your car more easily to place a Tag. On the public road that is of course a breeze. The police are also in favor of installing an (external) steering wheel lock. The thieves may know where your car is, but they can’t drive away with it. Or they also have to have tools to saw through the steering wheel lock, but that chance is quite small.
