Carl Pei (OnePlus, Nothing) doesn’t mince words about the state of the tech industry. But he doesn’t have much evidence to the contrary.

OnePlus founder Carl Pei recently started his own tech brand called ‘Nothing’. It’s largely unknown what exactly the company does, but we do know that Pei has no affinity for conventional tech. In an interview with AndroidAuthority, he criticized the entire tech industry. But he himself has little to offer.

Carl Pei trasht tech industry

Pei has always been a relatively coarse-mouthed CEO and even now he does not mince words. According to the former OnePlus boss, there is a general lack of inspiration in the entire tech industry. The medium asks what new products he really wanted recently.

Nothing comes to mind at the moment. I think there’s just a lack of inspiration. I’m not the only one; we also hear this in conversations with customers and focus groups. It’s as if each generation is just a small upgrade from the previous one. Honestly, I haven’t seen anything recently that I was eager to buy.

Carl Pei on the state of the tech industry

The sentiment is certainly not unique; many tech enthusiasts will think that major product launches are always about minute differences. A smartphone with a slightly faster processor or a slightly better camera. A laptop with a little more RAM or a faster SSD. Few really revolutionary products have been released recently.

On the other hand, Pei is easy to talk to with Nothing. They’ve literally announced one pair of wireless earbuds since their inception early this year. Hardly anything is known about that. The brand focuses largely on building a Nothing community. The promises are great, but for the time being it is mainly a lot of words little deeds of Carl Pei’s Nothing.
