Everything you need to know about the new headphones
Sony today introduced the successor to the popular WF-1000XM3 with the WF-1000XM4. In addition to the expected improvements in sound, the Japanese manufacturer has particularly taken care of the battery life, fit and size of the headphones.
Sony WF-1000XM4 does a lot better
It’s finally here: the new generation of Sony’s in-ear headphones. With the Sony WF-1000XM4, the Japanese company has unveiled the direct successor to the WF-1000XM3 – and they have it all. Almost all the points that I didn’t like about the current generation at the time have been improved. These include the following innovations:
- Design: The WF-1000XM3 are huge and stick out a lot from the ears. The grip is also not ideal, so the headphones tend to fall out. That changes with the Sony WF-1000XM4. They are much more beautifully designed, nestle better against the ear canal and are supposed to offer a firmer hold. In addition, the round shape should ensure that they do not look so beefy on the ear. The headphones are still not really small.
- Sound and noise canceling: Anyone who simply sat down and listened to music with the Sony WF-1000XM3 was absolutely satisfied with the sound quality. The WF-1000XM4 should now also offer this experience when you are moving. The active noise suppression has been optimized for this purpose. The new processor, better isolation of the earplugs and the active noise suppression especially for wind noise should contribute to this. In addition, Sony has installed new drivers and an updated audio processor, which can show its strengths particularly with high-res audio. In general, however, the stability of the connection to the smartphone should also have been optimized.
- Smart features: The new headphones can recognize when someone is speaking to you while the music is playing. Then playback stops and the environment is enhanced. Alexa and the Google Assistant are supported as intelligent voice assistants. In addition, the headphones can be quickly connected to Android smartphones. The fast pair function is only available for Android users.
- Battery life: If you use the Sony headphones with active noise cancellation, you can now do that for eight hours. Without ANC, even 12 hours are possible. Including the charging station, you can reach a maximum of 24 hours. This time it can also be charged via Qi wireless charging.
- Speech quality: Sony is improving the voice quality when making calls by using bone conduction technology. As a result, the sound of the environment is not recorded at all, only your voice.
- IPX4 certification: Now that the headphones are no longer so out of the ear and should sit better, they can also be used for sports. IPX4 certification is available so that sweat does not damage the headphones.

Sony WF-1000XM4: price, availability and assessment
The new Sony headphones appear in June and cost 279 euros. The many improvements that Sony has implemented in the new generation are remarkable. Most of the criticisms we had with the predecessor are history. Only the possibility of connecting to two devices at the same time, so that they switch automatically when someone calls you, is also missing with the new generation. We’ll soon find out how good the headphones really are in the test.
