Europe: smartphone sales are falling, but the iPhone is progressing
Smartphone sales fell by around 11% in Europe in the second quarter of 2022. But some manufacturers, like Apple, were still in the green.
Apple saw iPhone sales in Europe grow 3%, thanks in part to iPhone SE 5G, firm says Counterpoint Research. The manufacturer sold 9.6 million iPhones on European soil, against 9.2 million a year earlier. Its market share is 24% on the continent, against 21% previously.
Samsung was the top seller with 13 million Galaxys, up from 12 million a year earlier. Its market share stands at 32%, against 27% previously. Xiaomi comes third with 7 million sales, which represents a drop of 39%. This would be explained by serious concerns of taming. On the other hand, the group has had some success in Eastern Europe, particularly following the withdrawal of Apple and Samsung from Russia.
The rest of the top 5 includes Oppo with 2.1 million smartphone sales, down 26% year-on-year. Realme comes in behind with 1.3 million sales, up 21%. In total, all manufacturers sold 40.3 million smartphones in Europe in the second quarter, against 45 million a year earlier.
“Results for the second quarter of 2022 were mixed and year-over-year comparisons mask complex market dynamics. A lot has changed in Europe compared to last year and even the previous quarter, both from an industry and macro perspective”points out Counterpoint Research.
