EU warns Apple about USB-C with iPhone 15 – here’s why

The iPhone 15 will probably be Apple’s first iPhone with USB-C. But the EU is already giving Apple a warning.

Read on after the ad.

Apple provides iPhone 15 with USB-C

It is almost certain that the iPhone 15 (Plus) and iPhone 15 Pro (Max) will have a USB-C connection this year. The European Union has passed a new law that states that all new electronic devices must have a USB-C connection from November 2024. This should reduce electronic waste in the future.

Apple is anticipating this law by providing the entire iPhone 15 series with a USB-C connection this year. However, this does not mean that the iPhone 15 will soon work with every USB-C cable, because Apple is going to have an MFi certification (Made for iPhone) requirements for accessories and chargers that you connect to the iPhone 15. The European Union is now warning Apple against introducing such a certification.

EU to ban sales of iPhones

If it’s up to Apple, only cables with an MFi certification will soon be able to handle the maximum charging speed of 27W. With the iPhone 14 (Plus), the highest charging speed is still 20W, but with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) this is already 27W. The entire iPhone 15 series gets the fastest charging speed at 27W, including the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus. This speed only works with Apple’s own charging cable.

The European Union has now responded to Apple’s plans. In a letter, the EU wrote to Apple that they do not allow charging speeds to be reduced with USB-C cables without MFi certification. If Apple does go through with this plan, the EU will ban the sale of iPhones in all countries that are members of the European Union.

Apple still has time: USB-C is only required from 2024

A big measure, so Apple may still choose to give all USB-C cables the maximum charging speed. The new law will not take effect until 2024, so Apple can still choose to give the maximum charging speed to only MFi-certified cables with the iPhone 15. However, it is unlikely that Apple will introduce these cables now, only to remove them from sale next year.

It is also necessary to buy a charging block with your new iPhone. A few years ago, Apple decided to stop supplying chargers with new iPhones. Make sure you take a charging block that can charge quickly.
