EU Commission bans app on employee work cell phones
The EU Commission prohibits its employees from using TikTok on their company cell phones. In the US, the government had previously banned its employees from using the app. The EU is reportedly following suit for security reasons.
Just a few weeks ago, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew launched a charm offensive. The goal: eliminate security concerns and make the app appear in a better light. But in vain. The EU Commission has now apparently asked its employees to delete the app from their work cell phones.
TikTok ban: EU Commission bans app on employee work cell phones
This comes from a report by the news portal Euractiv citing an internal email to EU staff. According to this, employees who do not comply with the request would be excluded from certain e-mail notifications from the EU Commission from March 15, 2023.
The European Commission justifies the step in a official press release meanwhile with considerable safety concerns. The government institution therefore wants to protect itself against IT security threats. However, the authority also emphasizes that the ban only applies to devices that dial into the Commission’s network.
TikTok condemns EU decision
A spokeswoman for TikTok condemned the EU Commission’s decision to the news magazine Mirror prompt:
We are disappointed with this decision, which we believe is misguided and based on fundamental misunderstandings.
The move is based on a long-standing dispute between numerous Western countries and TikTok parent company Bytedance. For example, the US government had already banned government employees from using TikTok on their company cell phones at the end of 2022.
