Elise & Vita Boers about maternity care (as an unnecessary luxury): ‘I cried really hard when she left’

The sisters Elise and Vita Boers are pregnant at the same time. In their podcast ‘About sister and stuff’, the two talk extensively about their pregnancy, (embarrassing) ailments, fears and insecurities. This time they ask themselves: Is maternity care an unnecessary luxury?

This week, the sisters discussed the added value of maternity care at length. Is it an unnecessary luxury or is it really necessary? Vita has yet to experience it and asks Elise the shirt of the body. He already received maternity care twice, first with Luca and Wolf, later with the birth of Coco.

Nice thought

Vita cannot imagine that it would be an unnecessary luxury, having a first child. She says: “I think it would be a very nice thought that someone would be at our house for the first week, or rather eight days, to guide us. With all the new things coming your way. Help in the house, makes breakfast and pampers you. I like that idea. That you don’t have to do it all alone, I still have so much to learn: how to bathe him, latch on with the breast. Just all things I don’t know yet.” “It gives more security. Self-confidence”, Elise adds to her sister.

“But”, Elise asks Vita: “Doesn’t it seem strange to have a stranger in the house?” “Not really. You are recovering so it seems to me that she will mainly be in the living room”, Vita replies.

Elise shares her experience with first-time maternity care: “My first time was with twins and I couldn’t have done without maternity care. It’s crazy! Wout and I spent a lot of time cocooning and recovering in bed. The maternity care helped with diapers, made tasty snacks and left the four of us in the bedroom very much. She did the laundry, put flowers in vases and made rusks with mice. I cried really hard when she left.”

Also without

Also for the second time with a third baby, Elise liked the maternity care. “It just didn’t take that long. They come from morning to end of day. At a certain point you think ‘leave us’. We’ve said that a few times. Fortunately, she understood and left early. We no longer had to reinvent the wheel and already knew a lot. When Wolf and Luca went to the nursery and the maternity care left earlier in the afternoon, we were without noise for a while. Have a rest. It was a bit much at times and thought let’s just relax, we understand what to do and it feels so natural. It was super nice when visitors came that she could make tea and also made dinner a few times. But now thought it was an unnecessary luxury. Glad she was there, but we could have done without it.”

suffer

Whether Elise would like maternity care again with a possible next child? She says: “I would, but only for the first three or four days. Eight days is too much for us. Or maybe not the full eight, nine hours in a day. The first days I thought it was amazing that she was there. Such a first week is hell and suffering. Then extra hands are very nice. It is great that maternity care exists in the Netherlands. And certainly with a first I sign for it.”
