Do you see strange or inappropriate advertising on Android? This is the solution

Advertisers try to obtain as much personal data as possible in order to offer advertisements that match your hobbies and needs. If you search for one item for a period of time, you will be presented with advertisements about it. This can lead to strange or unpleasant situations. Androidworld explains how to solve this.

Ads on Android

Activities you undertake in Android apps are stored in the Advertising ID associated with your Android phone. Data that is stored can be compared with cookies in your browser. Cookies are non-identifiable data about websites you visited. Advertisers can then use the data to offer advertisements that match the actions you have performed, and are therefore stored in your cookies.

On the one hand, personalized advertisements can be experienced positively. After all, it provides advertisements that fit your needs. This prevents you from seeing ads for diapers when you don’t have children (in that age range). At the same time, it does mean that privacy has to be compromised. All actions you take in the apps on your phone are recorded to be used for advertisements. Of course, the AVG/GDPR legislation ensures that such data must be anonymized. Yet it remains the case that at some point advertisers know more about you than you do.

Some data can lead to strange advertisements that you would rather not see on your phone. If you have regularly undertaken activities in the past in apps that fall into a certain category that you would rather not see ads, then Android luckily offers a solution. You can reset the Advertising ID in the Android settings. Data associated with your ID will be deleted for advertisers. No ads on that topic will then be shown unless they are served randomly.

Advertising ID Reset

To prevent advertisers from using ‘past data’ for ads, follow the steps below. Note that this means that you will encounter generic ads in Android apps for the time being. In addition, this is a temporary solution, if you perform the actions again, the data will be stored in your Advertising ID again.

  1. Open it settings menu from your android phone
  2. Navigate to google
  3. Click below Services on this device on Ads
  4. Select the option at the top Reset Ad ID
  5. click on OK when a pop-up asks for confirmation

If desired, you can also completely stop the data collection for your Advertising ID. You can read how that works in this article.
