eSIM is the electronic alternative to a physical nano-SIM card. It can help manufacturers save more space in phone housings and you can easily use multiple phone numbers side by side. But do you already have eSIM on your smartphone?

In 2019, T-Mobile was the first provider in the Netherlands to support eSIM. In the meantime, we are more than two years later and eSIM is also available at Vodafone and KPN, among others, but only a minority of the phones come with a special chip that makes eSIM possible. The function is usually only available as an extra on the more expensive flagships.

However, technology is certainly not standing still. Qualcomm launched its ‘iSIM’ technology last week, which is the functionality of eSIM that is integrated directly into the chipset of a smartphone. It stands for integrated sim and therefore no separate chip is required. It may eventually convince manufacturers to switch completely to the electronic SIM card and to omit the SIM card slot.

Not only does eSIM save space in the housing of telephones and you can easily add multiple subscriptions, there are also other advantages. By omitting physical cards, you save plastic waste and an iSIM or eSIM can also easily connect smaller devices to the internet. From smart home devices to wearables.
