Cult director takes a sharp stab at John Wick

John Wick is one of the biggest names in modern action cinema – but obviously the Keanu Reeves blockbusters cannot convince all filmmakers. Cult director Oliver Stone is now completely against the spectacle.

For many action fans, John Wick is one of the best series in recent years – even in the 4th entry This year, viewers can enjoy the stylish hail of bullets again. However, cult director Oliver Stone has nothing to gain from the Keanu Reeves hit and accuses the blockbuster of excessive and unrealistic violence. Criticism that comes as a bit of a surprise given Stone’s own extensive body of work, with films like Natural Born Killers, Savages and Platoon.

Oliver Stone hates John Wick action

In an interview with Variety, Stone said he saw John Wick 4 on a flight and called the film “incredibly disgusting.” Keanu Reeves would kill 300-400 people in it and not a single kill is realistic for Stone as a war veteran – the director was active as a soldier during the Vietnam War. For him, the blockbuster is more like a video game than a movie.

So on the one hand Stone seems to be bothered by the sheer volume of violent scenes in John Wick 4, but on the other hand also by the fact that they not be portrayed credibly and realistically enough. The action scenes bored him as they didn’t feel real and wouldn’t make a difference – that’s how he feels about Fast & Furious and the Marvel movies. (Source: Variety)

John Wick: Is the criticism justified?

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that modern action films like Fast & Furious or John Wick place little value on hard-hitting realism. In this regard Stone’s criticism is perfectly understandableespecially in relation to the many Marvel and DC films that, with their interchangeable staging, cause boredom among a growing number of viewers and critics.

That the director who in his work has not been a child of sadness himselfwho describes the violence in John Wick 4 as disgusting, seems a bit surprising at second glance and at least not particularly self-reflective.

Oliver Stone isn’t the only director who likes to pull off the leather – colleague Quentin Tarantino recently got upset about Netflix:
