Central government will no longer support ‘Berichtenbox app’ on old Android versions

An update has been rolled out for the Berichtenbox app via the Google Play Store. With this application you can view your inbox with messages that government agencies send to you. If you have an older Android version, the app may stop working soon.

The Berichtenbox app provides access to personal messages from various government organizations. Think of the tax authorities or municipalities. In addition to the website, you can also use the website, logging in is done via your DigiD, where you receive an SMS verification or you can log in via the DigiD app. You can now download an update for the Berichtenbox app via the Google Play Store.

With the new update, the developers promise technical improvements. However, there is an important caveat to Android users. This update, version 2.3.0, will be the last update supported by Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This means that for future updates you need a smartphone that runs at least on Android 7.0 Nougat. The app will not immediately go black under Marshmallow, but it can certainly cause problems in the long run.

We would, however, like to add a comment. Devices that run on such an old Android version can be vulnerable to leaks and the like. We do not recommend using such a device in everyday life. It is best to purchase a new device with Android 10 or Android 11. That way you are much better protected. Also read our overview with the best smartphone up to 300 euros.
