‘calling via satellites is coming’

According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 13 does not only have support for 4G and 5G. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that even without 4G and 5G coverage, you will soon be able to make calls and send messages via satellites.

Update August 31 8:54 AM:

After Kuo came out with his rumor, it soon followed Bloomberg with a supplement. According to the site, the satellite communication is specifically intended for two new functions.

The first function is called ‘Emergency Message via Satellite’ and lets you send text messages to emergency services when there is no mobile network nearby. This feature integrates directly into the Messages app, in addition to iMessage and SMS. Speech bubbles of messages sent via this satellite service are given a gray color. In addition, the length of the messages is limited.

The second function is a call function for major emergencies, such as a major fire or plane crash. This also works without mobile coverage, but via satellites in space. This function is comparable to the Dutch emergency number 112. When you call, your location is also sent to the emergency services. Plus, there’s an integration with iOS Emergency SOS notification that will notify your SOS contacts as well.

Not yet this year

further late Bloomberg know that the technology for this satellite communication is probably already in the iPhone 13, but that the function will only be officially rolled out in 2022.

Initially, Apple also planned to send its own satellites into space, but it will now use existing networks.

Out into space: iPhone 13 satellite communications

The iPhone 12 has support for, among other things, 4G and 5G for internet and calling. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 13 will receive an extra option, namely communication via satellites. The advantage of this is that you can also call and send messages outside the coverage of the 4G or 5G network.

Ming-Chi Kuo tells investors in a message that the iPhone 13 will receive support for low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications. These are satellites in lower orbits. The Apple analyst hereby indicates that the iPhone 13 will receive a ‘modified version of the Qualcomm X60 chip’. This chip supports communication via satellites.

It is not yet clear whether Apple will use the technology to support the mobile connection. It will probably become more of a function that you use in an emergency, for example in case of problems at sea or during a survival camping trip.

Satellite communication: for emergencies only

Current satellite phones are expensive and communication is very slow. That’s why you’re limited to voice and text messages with this. Support for satellite communications on your iPhone is very new and Apple just added 5G on the iPhone 12. So it’s too early to think you’ll be able to video chat from a mountaintop or deep in the desert. However, it is a great option for emergencies.
