Beware of unknown foreign numbers starting with +94!

The Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) has recently recorded an increased incidence of so-called wangiri calls. That is, practices in which the unsuspecting owner of the phone calls back to an unknown foreign number after a missed (very short) ringwhich can very often cost the caller quite expensively. “If a user calls a missed number, they will then be charged the high cost of such a call. Nowadays, these are most often ringtones from numbers that start by default +94 belonging to Sri Lanka. Fraudulent calls of this kind are usually from abroad, ”warns the CTU in its current statement.

According to the office, the most effective defense against this type of attack is mainly prevention. “We encourage all telephone service users to be attentive and if possible, they did not react in any way to call from unknown numbers with a foreign prefix. Otherwise, there is a risk that they will be forced to pay the increased price of this call, “warns the CTU with regard to the fact that the call carried out of one’s own free will you cannot rely too much on the success of a possible complaint procedure.
