Beware of suspicious phone calls, you may lose money

“I received a text message that looked like an official report from the tax office. And that I allegedly have an arrears that must be paid immediately. There was also a reference to the payment in the report, but there were no soft or long, instead of such strange signs, something like ¥ Œ ♦. I didn’t want to have any problems, so I paid for it. Then I got another message that they have my account, and if I want it back, I have to pay a ransom… “

This is an example of how phishing works in practice, which mBank now points out. The bank also sends a notification to clients to the application on the smartphone, we also received one.

However, in the last period another problem has spread in Slovakia, the so-called vishing. These are similar practices that are carried out by telephone.

Fraudsters can imitate any telephone number and impersonate a bank or, for example, the police. They want to obtain sensitive personal data or money from the victim. The bank draws attention to this type of fraud, as it is possible that attackers will also hide behind the name mBank.

How does vishing work and how to prevent it?

The fraudster will call you under the pretext of blocked internet banking or another important thing that you would definitely like to resolve as soon as possible. During the call, he tries to lure you out of data that only you should know. For example, credit card information, ID or password or authorization SMS. He can easily ask for data from his identity card and the like.

The simplest defense is to use common sense. It always works. If it seems to you that the other party is asking for too sensitive data, everything will probably not be all right. If you find the call suspicious, hang up.

The best next step is to call the institution from which you allegedly received the call and thus verify whether it was a real employee of the bank and the like or a fraud.

The police also pointed out the fraud

Suspicious phone calls were recently alerted by the police on their Facebook.

“The purpose of telephone calls is to obtain a person’s authentication and verification data for the bank’s services or products so that they can subsequently be misused for unauthorized financial transactions.” police say on their Facebook.
