Beware! Android 12 may brick OnePlus 9

Installing Android 12 on a OnePlus 9 (Pro) can have disastrous consequences for the smartphone, OnePlus itself warns.

The Android 12 beta is now available for a select number of brands, but anyone with a OnePlus 9 may want to skip the update for a while. Via OnePlus’ own forum, the brand warns that installing the update can brick smartphones. What is going on?

The beta of Android 12 is usually useful for developers and manufacturers to test out new features. This kite does not apply to OnePlus 9 owners, as the OS can destroy smartphones. The manufacturer therefore explicitly warns users who want to try out Android 12.

You have to understand that there is a risk of that [Android 12] brick your smartphone. Read the instructions carefully and be 100% sure of what you are doing. Please always backup important data before flashing.

The official Google blog post with compatible devices still mentions OnePlus, but clicking the link now will take you to a nonexistent page. Anyone who tried to install the update may have lost their data. XDA-Developers has a guide to possibly go back to a previous version of Android. It does not seem that any lost data can be recovered.

OnePlus reports that a boot loader must be activated before you update the OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro with Android 12. You must also have at least 30% battery and 3GB of free storage space. These precautionary measures would prevent any problems. If I had a OnePlus 9, on the other hand, I would just wait!
