Bank hacking: are you one of the 45,000 French victims?

Piracy has been around since the early days of the Internet. The World Wide Web is indeed a fabulous playground for hackers who see it almost as an online amusement park. They can go out of their way to find security holes in all email sites and services in order to retrieve as much data about you as possible. And we are not talking about cookies here whose only punishment for you will be the display of targeted advertisements. No, this is data whose leak can be much more problematic for you: your banking information. A new big catch from a famous hacker has recently splashed the Dark Web.

Dark is the new web

The Dark Web is the hidden part of the Internet. There is the same environment there, except that in addition to having blogs of dissidents and forbidden books, you will find stalls selling drugs, weapons, false official documents and data of all kinds. While it is fairly easy to access it, it is more complicated to find what you want (we give you some ideas here for the curious). A few days ago, a known hacker of this malicious sphere made advertising its stolen data store by uploading the information of more than a million bank cards free of charge. There, under your amazed eyes, you can effortlessly find the 16 digits of the CB, its expiry date, the three-digit code written behind (CVV), but also the name of the owner as well as his postal and electronic addresses. The total.

The hacker announced that the information he possesses was collected between 2018 and 2019. However, he was careful not to explain the method he used. This disclosure is nothing more thana marketing coup on his part to praise the quality of his merchandise, or social security numbers from the USA and Canada and more than 2.6 million bank card details so far never pirated that it offers on average at 9 € / piece. Several dozen French cards are available there.

A blue, white and red account

These are indeed, according to our colleague from Zataz, no less than 46,300 French cards which are available on the hacker’s site, as do nearly 45,000 Canadian women. So it is time for you to check if you have any strange movements on your account. If so, don’t waste time and contact your bank as soon as possible to report that you have been the victim of hacking. Be aware that, whatever happens, if the fraud is confirmed, you will be fully reimbursed for the amount that the hacker will have spent without your knowledge. Indeed, the bank cannot prove your negligence, even if it cannot be otherwise. Still according to Damien Bancal de Zataz, the CVV code can only be recovered if the owner willingly gives it to a fraudulent site for example.

Our advice to avoid the worst …

To avoid the hacking of your credit card data, there are several very effective solutions. The first is one of the latest innovations to date with dynamic cryptogram cards which change CVV every hour. The number displayed is indeed different 24 times a day, which makes hack attempts very complicated. The second is the use of a single-use bank card number. To do this, go to your bank’s website and ask for an ephemeral number that will allow you to pay with your bank account but with the help of a card number created for the occasion and which will only work times. Finally, never communicate your banking information on a site from a simple link received by e-mail.
