The football club AZ does believe in Bitcoin, has entered into a sponsorship deal and is being paid out in cryptos.

Sponsorship deals in football are commonplace. But the deal that the professional football club AZ has made is remarkable. They have entered into an exclusive partnership with cryptocurrency exchange platform Bitcoin Meester. That in itself is not so strange, but part of the sponsorship amount is paid in Bitcoin.

The football club will leave the cryptos on its balance sheet during the collaboration. The club claims to be the first Dutch football club to do so. Not the collaboration with a crypto company, because Feijenoord, Sparta and Ajax already do that. But this refers to digital payment and not withdrawal.

The two companies have entered into an agreement that will last at least three years. They are therefore linked to each other until 2024. For Bitcoin Meester it is “central that this is the further marketing of crypto in the football world.” Bitcoin Meester is a crypto exchange service provider registered with De Nederlandsche Bank. The platform allows users to buy, sell and store over 200 different cryptocurrencies.

They don’t really have much to do with each other, but they don’t have to be. AZ’s commercial director is Michael Koster and said of the deal: “The cryptocurrency market is booming, with exponential growth of users in recent years. That is attractive, but it is precisely in a new market that a direction is important.’ The direction is apparently football and the sponsorship in it.
