Armin Laschet prevented chancellor duel for U30 target group
Youtuber Rezo and journalist Tilo Jung developed a U30 talk format with prominent partners, but the project failed because of Armin Laschet. The reasons cause outrage.
There is currently a discussion about the future viability of the CDU under the hashtag #Laschetkneift. The trigger is a video in which the prominent Youtuber Rezo reports on a new discussion format for the candidate for chancellor. The journalist Tilo Jung (Jung & Naiv) had suggested and both prepared the livestream event. As a result, they found prominent supporters and received commitments from all actors. However, the project ultimately failed due to the rejection of the CDU candidate.

The time, Youtube and Twitch on board
Rezo reports that the two YouTube stars first brought the streaming platforms on board. Twitch and Youtube agreed and promised to promote the format accordingly. As a media partner, Die Zeit was gained to present the event. A kind of chancellor’s triall was envisaged, in which the candidates would answer critical questions live. Those responsible primarily saw the U30 generations as the target group. In preparation, Rezo spoke to Robert Habeck and other party leaders. In the end, Anna-Lena Baerbock and Olaf Scholz agreed. The only requirement: Armin Laschet must also be part of the party.

CDU: No interest in presenting yourself in new media
Rezo then spoke to the CDU politician personally and explained to him that this would be a good opportunity to convey his positions to the young target group. After several weeks and after several inquiries, the CDU candidate for chancellor finally canceled. Rezo says he understood the rejection to mean that the CDU relies exclusively on old media and has no interest in presenting itself on modern platforms. The Youtuber is dismayed because the younger generations cannot be reached on television. Political interest in these age groups has risen sharply lately. In his opinion, showing an interest in these groups would have been a good sign. “If you don’t even take an evening off during the entire election campaign for these generations, then that’s a bad sign,” said Rezo.
@rezomusik and @TiloJung wanted to set up a chancellor duel (“or -trial?”) together. Youtube and Twitch would have been there. @zeitonline would have been a host. Just: @ArminLaschet canceled – “everyone else would have been at the start”. 🤷♂️https://t.co/hwxYTf2BhK

Twitter discussion: Young target group does not matter
The reactions under the video and in the corresponding tweets are manifold and very different. Because of the demographics, the over-60s decide anyway, you can read there. In fact, over 38 percent of those taking part in the elections are over 60 years of age and those under 30, at 28.7 percent, are rather underrepresented. Another argument is that Rezo has just shown his anti-CDU attitude with the contributions “Destruction of the CDU” and “Rezo destroys the Corona policy”. It is countered that Anna-Lena Baerbock finally gave the Bild-Zeitung an interview. It is also proclaimed that the Christian Union criticized Rezo’s CDU rant for not having spoken to them beforehand. Now the party for its part has turned down the offer to speak. There is also talk of a lack of knowledge when two left-wing journalists question CDU politicians; Laschet also has no chance from the outset with the young target group. The party headquarters has not yet commented on the incident.
