‘Are you going on a maternity visit? Don’t forget these 9 golden rules’

1. Call in advance

It is not for nothing on every birth announcement. As a new mother you are usually not waiting for an unexpected visit. So call or app to ask if it’s convenient.

2. Don’t feel offended if you’re not welcome

Don’t ask when you can come, but whether you can come. Maybe the parents aren’t ready for that yet. Above all, don’t feel offended; it is often not personal. Let us know that you understand and that you will contact us again in a week or two.

3. It’s not about you

Perhaps seeing the baby brings back memories of your own pregnancy. Or you suddenly feel the need to complain about your new boss. All ok, but preferably not during the maternity visit. Try to focus on the happiness of your girlfriend, sister or neighbor.

4. Watch your hygiene je

Very important for a visit to a little one: wash or disinfect your hands. Do you have a cold? Then postpone your visit.

5. Offer help

Don’t push, but ask if you can help with anything. They may like it when the dog takes a walk, plays with her toddler, or loads the dishwasher. Small effort, but sometimes a gift from heaven.

6. Bring some treats

A nice meal or a piece of cake: food is often welcome. It is especially nice if the food can be frozen, which saves the mother time.

7. Be careful asking questions

It’s well-intentioned, of course, but questions can sometimes come across as unfortunate. Don’t ask ‘Did you have an epidural during labor?’ but ‘Do you want to talk about childbirth?’ And don’t ask ‘Are you so in love with him or her?’ but ‘How do you actually feel?’

8. Don’t Make Critical Comments

Comments about a dirty kitchen, leaking breasts or unkempt hair are the last thing a new mother is waiting for. Better keep this one to yourself.

9. Don’t stay too long

A baby is very cute, we get that. But don’t hang around for hours. Mother and child need rest and it can be quite uncomfortable to send someone away yourself.
