Apple is working on new AirPods
The RC (release candidate build) of iOS 16.4 already revealed: Apple is working on new AirPods. The test version of iOS referred to AirPods with model number A3048 and an AirPods case with the number A2968. We don’t know these numbers yet, so it’s a new pair of AirPods.

The usually reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now confirmed that. He predicts that Apple will introduce a new pair of AirPods with a USB-C connection this year. However, according to the analyst, the new connection, in accordance with the new European legislation, will not come to all new AirPods. Which AirPods do get the USB-C port?
AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 don’t get USB-C
According to Kuo, Apple will only bring the USB-C connection to the AirPods Pro 2. That means that all new AirPods Pro 2 models that are produced after a certain date this year will receive the new USB-C port. According to Kuo, all other earphones will no longer receive a new USB-C output. The AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and the first-generation AirPods Pro then keep Apple’s Lightning output.
It is not clear whether Apple will also sell the AirPods Pro 2 case with USB-C port separately. At the moment, Apple is not yet selling the box of the AirPods Pro separately. So if you now want a case with USB-C, you also have to buy new AirPods right away. It is quite possible that Apple will soon sell the case separately, so that it is easier to switch to AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C.
AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C will appear this year
Kuo expects Apple to release the updated AirPods Pro 2 in the second quarter of 2023. That would mean that the earphones will appear on the market no later than June. If Apple does not meet this deadline, the AirPods Pro with USB-C may not appear until the third quarter, according to Kuo. In any case, according to him, it is certain that we will see renewed AirPods in 2023.
