Apple trains Siri to better understand people who stutter

Apple is training Siri to better understand people with speech impediments (such as stuttering). There are also special functions for this in the iPhone.

Siri will better understand people who stutter

That writes The Wall Street Journal in an article confirming from an Apple spokesperson. The easiest way to activate Apple’s voice assistant is to say “Hey Siri.” But if you have trouble speaking, that’s a different story. To make Siri more accessible to people who stutter, for example, Apple has started a large-scale project.

The company has collected a database of 28,000 audio clips from people who stutter in podcasts. These audio clips are now used to train Siri’s algorithm to understand faster and better what someone who stutters means.

In addition, Apple has deliberately added the ‘hold to talk’ function to Siri. As long as you hold down the lock button, Siri will continue to listen, so that it doesn’t interrupt someone who needs a little more time to speak.

In addition, you can also use Siri completely without speech. This option must be activated manually and makes it possible to type messages to the assistant instead of speaking them. You activate this as follows.

Here’s how to type instead of talking to Siri:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Go to ‘General’;
  3. Choose ‘Accessibility’;
  4. Tap on ‘Siri’;
  5. Turn on the switch behind ‘Type questions to Siri’.

In addition to Siri, Google and Amazon are also working on their assistants to improve them in this area.
