Apple new number 1 thanks to iPhone 12 – Huawei drops out of top 5

No time right now?

In the Christmas quarter, Apple sold more smartphones than ever. Huawei, on the other hand, has had to give up a lot and lost massively in the ranking of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers.

Every year Apple wins the crown of the smartphone manufacturer with the best-selling devices worldwide in the Christmas quarter. That was the case again in the fourth quarter of 2020, but the iPhone manufacturer was able to achieve an absolute sales record despite the later market launch of its iPhone 12 series. On the other hand, the tech giant Huawei, which had to say goodbye to the top positions in the fourth quarter, has lost massive ground.

Apple with record sales in Q4 2021

The two market researchers IDC and Canalys independently named Apple the smartphone winner in the fourth quarter of 2020. The manufacturer is said to have sold between 80 and 90 million iPhones within three months, which Apple owes primarily to its new iPhone 12 series. Compared to the same quarter last year, Apple was able to grow by four percent, according to market researchers. “The iPhone 12 (test) is a hit,” says Canalys analyst Vincent Thielke.

Top dog Samsung had to admit defeat to Apple again in the fourth quarter. According to IDC and Canalys, the South Korean manufacturer was able to sell between 63 and 74 million smartphones – a decrease of twelve percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, according to Canalys. However, similar developments can be observed every year. As soon as Samsung brings its new top models onto the market – this year with the Galaxy S21 series even earlier than ever – the tide should turn again.

Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are represented in the following places according to Canalys: Xiaomi grew in the fourth quarter by 31 percent with 43.4 million units sold, followed by Oppo with an increase of 15 percent and 34.7 million units. Vivo sold 32.1 million units in the same period and grew by 14 percent. There is no trace of Huawei in the top 5 at Canalys: According to market researchers, the company – including the former, now independent subsidiary Honor – was only able to sell 32 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2020. This puts Huawei close to Vivo, as the IDC ranking shows. Vivo is not represented there, but Huawei is still represented.

According to IDC, Huawei lost over 42 percent compared to the same quarter last year, which can be attributed to the US sanctions against the company that have been in place since May 2019. Since the Mate 30 Pro, Huawei has had to do without the Google services that are relevant for the world market with its new smartphones. Huawei has already lost market share by 20 percent in the last few quarters, but a minus of over 40 percent is a new low.

Smartphone market 2020: Samsung emerges as the winner

Samsung is still ahead in the annual ranking. Apple lands in second place and Huawei in third place – still. (Screenshot: Canalys)

If you take a look at the whole of 2020, only a few shifts can be observed in the market: Samsung remains the undisputed market leader with over 255 million devices sold, but suffers a year-on-year decline of 14 percent. Thanks to the iPhone 12 series, with 207 million units and an increase of five percent, Apple lands in second place. Despite the US sanctions, Huawei still manages third place in the annual ranking with 188 million units, but suffers a massive minus of 22 Percent compared to the previous year’s figures.

In the following places are Xiaomi with a plus of 19 percent and almost 150 million devices sold and Oppo with 115 million units. It is quite clear that the old players like Samsung and Apple, but also Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are benefiting from Huawei’s misery with the USA. As long as the new US administration under President Biden does not relax, the manufacturer’s situation is unlikely to change.
