‘Apple is working on a stronger charging cable that is less likely to break’

Apple’s charging cables are known to break quickly. A patent filed by the company betrays that they are working on a new type of cable that is less likely to break.

Read on after the ad.

Patent: Apple is working on stronger charging cables

The patent was first noticed by AppleInsider. In the document, Apple describes a way to make charging cables less likely to break. The company wants to achieve this by giving the cables a “variable hardness”. This means that the future charging cable will be extra reinforced at vulnerable points and more flexible in other places, making it easier to store.

Apple is also considering removing the embankments at the ends of the current cables. The patent describes that these ends are regularly under high pressure, for example during winding up. This causes the internal electricity cables to break quickly. Finally, Apple emphasizes that the new charging cable will be just as thick as the current ones.

It is still a patent. So it is not clear if and when Apple will start production and release the charging cable. It does show that the company is working on it in the background.

Problems with Apple charging cables

Apple’s current charging cables are not known for their durability. They have a reputation for wearing out or breaking open relatively quickly. Once the outer protective layer has been broken open, the internal cables may break. This makes your Apple device charge less quickly, or not at all.

Since the iPhone 12, which came out at the end of 2020, Apple smartphones have been delivered without an adapter (charging block) as standard. The company claims to do this for environmental reasons and because many people already have a charger at home. Prior to the iPhone 12, it was long speculated that Apple would instead include a sturdier charging cable in the box. This rumor turned out to be incorrect.
