Apple definitely beats Samsung at the end of 2020

In 2020, Apple managed to beat Samsung in global smartphone sales for the first time in years.

Since 2016, there has actually been one winner practically every quarter in terms of worldwide smartphone sales. That is of course Samsung. But at the end of 2020, not Samsung, not Huawei, but Apple managed to dominate smartphone sales. New figures from Gartner analysts show that Apple sold by far the most smartphones.

Apple dominates smartphone sales in late 2020

In the fourth quarter of 2020, Apple managed to completely dominate smartphone sales. According to the analysts, the iPhone maker managed to sell nearly 80 million iPhones. That was good for a market share of almost 21%.

Opposite (or below) is Samsung. Traditionally, the South Korean company actually manages to dominate every quarter. But in Q4 of 2020, Samsung ‘only’ sold 62 million units. That is 29% less than Apple. Incidentally, Samsung was able to retain more in terms of market share than that decrease of 29%; they still owned 16.2% of global smartphone sales during that period.

Where Huawei once managed to beat Samsung sporadically, the banned Chinese brand now has to make do with fifth place. Huawei’s market share plummeted by more than 41%. In 3rd and 4th place are OPPO and Xiaomi respectively with a market share of 11.3% and 8.9%.

Throughout 2020, Samsung was still able to maintain the lead by far. Although there was a decline of almost 15%, the South Koreans managed to stay ahead of Apple (which experienced a slight increase).
