Apple boss Tim Cook doubles his salary, but falls in the top earner ranking

Tim Cook almost exactly doubled his salary compared to last year. Nevertheless, it falls from 2nd to 8th place in the top earner ranking. Others have simply increased their salaries more significantly.

Bloomberg has updated its ranking of the top earners in US companies for 2020. That is led by Elon Musk, who closed 2020 with a considerable number of stock options. The meanwhile richest man in the world was able to collect an astonishing US $ 6.6 billion in Tesla stock options.

After Musk, all of the following top earners drop significantly, which is why Bloomberg offers a button in its ranking with the help of which you can display the ranking without Musk with one click. This makes the salary compositions of top US executives easier to read.

Tim Cook: Salary stays the same, but stock awards double

Apple CEO Tim Cook was able to book a total of $ 265 million in salary and salary components in 2020. The actual salary was “only” three million dollars. By far the most important part of the income is the stock awards, which amount to over $ 250 million. A decent bonus of around eleven million dollars will sweeten Cook’s payroll even further. With a good million he has to credit himself with discounts such as flights in a private jet and similar “perks”.

On closer inspection, Cook’s earnings have only changed significantly in the area of stock awards. According to the ranking of 2019, within which Cook was still ranked second after Musk, he received the same salary at three million at the time. The bonuses were around eight instead of eleven million and the “small perks” had to be credited to Cook with around 90,000 dollars. The stock awards alone, at $ 122 million, made up less than half of the 2020 commitments.

Corona pandemic changes top earner ranking seriously

In 2020, Cook will have to settle for 8th place because the corona year has made other divisions even richer. So it is not surprising that places 2 to 7 are mostly occupied by people who earn their living with medical or medical-related services. The exception is the real estate buyer Opendoor with his boss Eric Wu. Opendoor buys houses, renovates them and sells them again.

Business in the big data environment also went great in 2020. Palantir boss Alex Karp made it to rank 6. Ranks 3 and 4 were occupied by the bosses of the recipe comparison service GoodRX Holdings.

With around $ 570 million in second place is Mike Pykosz, who can look forward to stock awards and stock options at the same time. In total, they raise his otherwise comparatively modest salary of around $ 580,000 to astronomical heights. Pykosz is the head of Oak Health, an operator of care facilities and services for the elderly.

If we only consider the regular salaries, Apple boss Tim Cook is the undisputed number 1. In second place in this ranking would be Alex Karp from Palantir with 1.1 million. Musk would fall out. He doesn’t get a salary.
