App of the week: gamify your daily walks with Ommetje

With summer approaching, you may want to lose a few pounds again and a walk during the corona crisis won’t hurt anyway. Ommetje, an app from the Brain Foundation, provides fun while walking through gamification. How the app works? You can read it in the ‘App of the week’.

Ommetje

Perhaps you recognize in yourself or in others in your environment the image that it is becoming more and more normal and pleasant to take a short walk in the neighborhood. Take a break in the fresh air and then round off a working day behind the desk. There is also not much else with the current measures, which have ensured that most sports venues are closed. If walking does not seem to go without saying, Ommetje may well be the perfect app to get you walking. Via the app you can score points, and thus gamify your walks.

Before walking can start, you must first set up the app. After downloading from the Google Play Store, you must first create an account with an email address, username and password. Afterwards you have to make the choice through Ommetje to start your own team, join another team or walk in the national group. To join other teams, you need to request a code and enter it when creating the account – you can create a team at any time, or join another team.

Gamification

After the account has been created, the battle for points can begin. Depending on the duration of your walk, you will be awarded a number of points. Ommetje distinguishes between walks of a duration of 20 minutes and walks that last longer than 20 minutes. Bonus points are awarded for hikes that last longer than 20 minutes. Bonus points are also available for regular walkers and for walkers who cover long (er) distances, if you walk more than 750 meters, you get 4 points extra as standard. Please note, the app must have constant access to your location for this.

With the app, the brain foundation also tries to get people to take a walk on a daily basis. For the so-called walking series – walking for several days in a row – you receive extra points if you have achieved a certain series. It starts easily at five days, but goes up to 360 days in a row. Another medal you can earn is for walks that start in the early morning (before 09:00). Ultimately, of course, it is all about getting to the top of the rankings and keeping moving regularly.

After each walk you also get the chance to share the Brain Foundation campaign, for which you receive 2 points as a participant. Finally, after every walk you get a fun brain fact, which can be collected to – you guessed it – earn points. In addition to the fact that it will be fun to collect the points, it also provides you with a number of fun facts.
