Set Animated Wallpaper on iPhone
If you want to set a moving wallpaper on your iPhone, you need a Live Photo. A Live Photo is actually a very short video. With a Live Photo, one and a half seconds before and one and a half seconds after the photo is taken.
You can then set these Live Photos as wallpaper on your iPhone. This is only possible on the Lock screen, so on your lock screen. On the home screen of your iPhone (where all apps are located), setting a moving wallpaper is allowed, but then the background does not move.
If you already have a Live Photo, set it as a moving wallpaper as follows. Don’t have a Live Photo yet? Then you can read further in this article how to make them or where it is best to download them.
Set moving wallpaper as wallpaper on iPhone
- Open the camera roll on your iPhone by tapping “Photos”;
- Tap ‘Albums’, scroll down and choose ‘Live Photos’;
- Open the photo and tap the share icon at the bottom left (the square with the arrow);
- Scroll down and choose ‘Use as wallpaper’;
- Adjust the size of the Live Photo to fit neatly on the screen and tap ‘Set’;
- Select ‘Entry screen’ and the moving wallpaper is set.
Now when you hold down the finger on the lock screen, the wallpaper will start moving.
Make your own Live Photo
You also have the option to create your own Live Photo, which you can then set as a moving wallpaper. You do this in the following way:
- Open the Camera app;
- Set the camera to ‘Photo’ mode, above the print button;
- Turn on the Live option at the top right, you can recognize this by the icon with the three circles (a yellow block with LIVE now appears);
- Take the photo by pressing the print button. Your Live Photo will then be in your camera roll.
It is best to take a Live Photo upright. Then you will soon have a beautiful, full-screen moving background on your iPhone.

There are several apps that let you download moving wallpapers and Live Photos. They are often full of advertisements or you even have to take out a subscription. iPhoned however, has a neat trick that gives you free access to thousands of moving wallpapers for your iPhone to set.

To download moving wallpaper and Live Photos we use the app TikTok. Download the app if you don’t already have it and create an account. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to find the moving wallpapers for your iPhone.
- Start TikTok and log in with your account;
- Tap Start at the bottom and tap the magnifying glass at the top right;
- Type in the text box on ‘Live wallpaper’ and press ‘Search’;
- Tap “Videos” at the top of the window;
- Scroll through the moving wallpapers and Live Photos until you find one you like;
- Open the background or the Live Photo and tap the arrow at the bottom right;
- Select ‘Live Photo’ at the bottom right to download the Live Photo;
- The Live Photo is then in your camera roll and you can now set it as the background.
