Google wants to integrate digital vaccination records directly into Android smartphones

While the digital proof of a vaccination against the coronavirus is now available across borders in the EU, Google is still working on its own solution. The aim is, to integrate a corresponding proof directly into Android – with detours.

Google does not want to develop its own app such as CovPass or the Corona warning app. Instead, Android’s own “Passes API” has been expanded to include the ability to deal with vaccination records. So, in a sense, Google is building the road that governments and organizations are now allowed to drive their cars on.

At the start, the function will only be available in the USA, according to the official announcement. A start date outside the USA has not yet been commented on. The prerequisites for use have already been determined. At least Android 5 must be installed on the mobile phone and the smartphone must be certified via Play Protect.

Google promises full data protection

According to Google, should sensitive information is only stored on the respective Android device become. A connection to the cloud is not planned. Third-party providers also have no way of accessing information. The vaccination certificate should also not be used for targeted advertisements.
