Android is 47 times more affected by malware than iOS, Apple’s boss said

In a recent interview, Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, made a teasing remark about Android. In a debate over app stores, he said Android is 47 times more affected by rampant malware than “their” iOS. He was right? Actually, half. In explaining how important it is for Apple to have the installation of applications tied only to the offer in the App Store, he probably worked with old numbers.

The whole discussion revolved around security and specifically the possibility of installing applications. Cook reminded that Apple product owners normally only have access to the App Store, which allows the company to better secure the entire ecosystem. “Installing from other sources can ruin the security of iPhones,” he warned, adding that Android has recorded 47x more malware attacks.

The number would fit Nokia’s 2019 report, where Android devices were listed as malware targets in 47% of cases. Apple had one percent. A year later, however, Android was already around 26 percent and the iPhone at 1.7%. So Apple’s boss in this case rather stepped aside, although he pointed to a logical thing. Finally, the convenient installation of applications from other sources is one of the most significant differences between Android and iOS.
