Android Earthquake Alerts System: earthquake alert on your smartphone!

In June 2021, Google deployed its Android seismic alert system in nine additional countries (it was already in place in the US): Greece, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Philippines. Nice timing for the inhabitants of this archipelago since a magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the country on July 24. Residents who own an Android mobile could therefore be warned of the imminent earthquake a few seconds before the start of the tremors by ringing their smartphone.

Android Earthquake Alert System, how does it work?

But how does it work ? The alert system works by using the accelerometer on your Android device. The latter will detect the P wave: a non-destructive shock that initiates the earthquake. Your phone then sends its information to Google’s earthquake detection server. Android Earthquake Alert System analyzes data from all smartphones in the area in real time and aggregates the results. If the shake has a magnitude between 3 and 4, a notification will be displayed on the device while above 4.5 the mobile will start to ring even if it is set to silent mode. Successful test for the world’s largest earthquake detection network as numerous testimonials on Reddit and Twitter show the alert was received on time.

If you are traveling to countries where the Android Earthquake Alerts System is operating, simply go to the advanced geolocation options and verify that the emergency location service is activated. Be careful, this has nothing to do with Cell Broadcast which allows you to be informed of kidnappings alerts, attacks …

Reports from devices in the area are verified before sending an audible notification including a map, magnitude and safety reminders. Just enough time to take shelter then.
