Android 12 will probably disconnect applications from the Internet. How and why?

Have you ever dealt with a situation where you want to temporarily or permanently block some applications from accessing the Internet connection? There can be several reasons for this, leading to savings in paid data traffic. In the Android world for this area there is currently no general system solution. Therefore, many users entrust connection management to external applications such as NetGuard. However, as it is slowly showing, Google plans to build the feature directly into the new version of the system. The first snippets of code for Android 12 suggest that a new feature should come restricted networking mode. It should fulfill exactly this role.

Traces of this tool are currently in the Android Open Source Project or AOSP source files. Interesting intentions can be deduced from the description of the developers and the name of the function. The new mode should primarily provide the user with a button to disconnect additionally installed applications from the Internet, while only the system or pre-installed ones would remain connected. The only thing that such limited applications could deliver to the user are classic notifications through the Firebase Cloud Messaging environment. Otherwise, they should not download or perform any other Internet-related tasks in the background.

It is not yet clear whether the new restricted networking mode feature in Android 12 would really just split the application into these two groups, or they will manage independently. If the second option were to apply, it would be a very welcome tool. We may know the answer in a few weeks, when the first Developer preview for the twelfth Android is due to appear.

Which applications would suit you?
