Android 12 will bring back double-tap function

Android 12 may soon support the double-tap feature for Pixel smartphones. The gesture can again be set as the user wants.

Google may return the double-tap feature to Pixel smartphones with Android 12. Sources tell 9to5Google that the search giant is breathing new life into the Columbus project. Although only a small peripheral feature, it would add to the appeal of a Pixel device.

Android 12 may get a double tap feature

The double tap function would one day be introduced for Android 11, it never got further than a preview variant. Now, however, it seems to actually come true.

The function is exceptionally simple; you tap the back of your screen twice and your Pixel smartphone starts Google Assistant by default. The gesture, on the other hand, can be set as anything. You can use it to open your camera, take a screenshot or snooze your alarm clock.

According to the linked medium, this is an improved version of the feature. Android 12 would only accept a solid double tap as input. An accidental small second tap when picking up your smartphone is therefore not interpreted as a command. It would also be great if more functions could be linked to it. And while Google is at it, could the feature also come to other smartphones?

Double tap for Android 12 has a funny codename, Columbus. No, it has nothing to do with the explorer. The code name refers to the eponymous character from the zombie comedy Zombieland. Jesse Eisenberg’s character has the rule ‘double tap’ for killing zombies there.
