Amazon confirms layoff of 18,000 employees
Online mail order company Amazon plans to lay off more than 18,000 employees. CEO Andy Jassy announced this to his staff in an internal memo. This means that the job cuts at the US group are significantly more extensive than previously assumed. So far, around 10,000 jobs have been mentioned.
The wave of layoffs at Amazon is much more extensive than previously assumed. Because like CEO Andy Jassy, his staff now in an internal memo announced that the US group wants to cut more than 18,000 jobs. In November 2021, there was talk of around 10,000 layoffs.

Even then, the company announced further job cuts. Andy Jassy has now announced that other Amazon employees are on the verge of an internal audit. He wrote about this on Wednesday, January 5, 2023, in a official statement:
Today I would like to share with you the result of these further reviews, namely the difficult decision to cut further posts. With the cuts we made in November and those we are announcing today, we plan to cut just over 18,000 jobs.
According to Jassy, the wave of layoffs affects several teams at the online mail order company. However, most of the layoffs will take place in the Amazon stores and in the technology departments “PXT Solutions”.
After employee leak: Amazon confirms mass layoffs
Amazon has apparently not yet spoken to the affected employees. However, since the layoffs initially announced internally leaked out through an employee, the company said it was forced to publish a statement.
Accordingly, the US group intends to notify the employees concerned of their dismissal from January 18th. The job cuts are the largest in the company’s history. Previously, Amazon had significantly increased its workforce in response to the boom in online retail during the Corona pandemic.
Employees should receive compensation
At the beginning of 2022 were again around 1.6 million employees working for the e-commerce giant. However, the number of employees then fell again. Due to the current inflation, the company’s net profit fell significantly. The wave of layoffs is therefore primarily a reaction to the current economic situation.
Meanwhile, Amazon announced that the company does not want to take the job cuts lightly. The affected employees should therefore receive support. This could take the form of severance pay, interim health insurance and an external job placement service.
